The iron cage wasn’t to protect the public from Andrei Chikatilo, ‘The Rostov Ripper’. It was to protect him from the revenge hungry relatives that packed the court room.

The authorities were keen to make up for their slow response to the fact that there was a serial killer operating and wanting a quick result. The verdict was never in doubt.
