The murder of Bethany Hill: A love triangle turned deadly

On a cold February night in 2016, 20-year-old Bethany Marie Hill was brutally murdered in her shared apartment in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire.

The case shocked the local community and later drew international attention for the chilling nature of the crime. Not to mention the tangled relationships at the heart of it.

Let’s have a closer look at this disturbing case.

A complicated love triangle

Bethany Hill, described by her family as a 'fun-loving girly girl', lived with Jack Williams, 21, and Kayleigh Woods, 23, in a flat on Hertford Road. Bethany had previously been in a relationship with Jack when they were teenagers but by early 2016 he was romantically involved with Kayleigh.

The three young people had a complicated dynamic. Despite being Jack’s ex, Bethany still kept in contact with him and Kayleigh. Even though their interactions were quite volatile and emotionally charged, it was reported that Bethany and Kayleigh had even talked about having a child together.

Bethany’s friends and family described her as a vibrant young woman with plans and ambitions. Her sudden and violent death would leave a community, not to mention her family, struggling with incomprehensible loss.

The night of the murder

On the morning of 3rd February 2016, police and paramedics responded to a 999 call from Kayleigh who said that Bethany was dead in the flat. When the police arrived, they found Bethany’s body in the bathroom. Her wrists were tied with duct tape and her neck repeatedly cut, the jugular vein fatally severed.

The bathroom was drenched in blood.

The forensic team discovered that Bethany had suffered multiple stabbing and cutting wounds during a prolonged, sadistic attack. Prosecutors later presented evidence that the killing was not a sudden, quick outburst but a brutal, extended assault.

But the most disturbing piece of information was the discovery of a Barbie doll hidden in a box at Kayleigh’s grandmother’s house. The doll’s hair was dyed to match Bethany’s red hair and its hands were bound with duct tape. This suggested to the police that the couple had practiced or fantasised about the violence before committing it.

Lies and contradictions

It was discovered later by investigators that Kayleigh waited over 12 hours after Bethany’s death before calling the police. When she finally called, she claimed that Bethany had killed herself. By then, Bethany’s body was already in rigor mortis, showing she had been dead for many hours.

Prosecutors said Kayleigh and Jack lied to cover up their role in the murder. During the 999 call, Kayleigh said, 'My best friend is dead in my flat,' but didn’t tell the truth about what happened.

Both Kayleigh and Jack continued to tell stories that contradicted forensic and witness evidence. This led investigators to look deeper into their backgrounds and question what had really happened inside the flat.

The investigation and trial

The case ended up in Warwick Crown Court, where prosecutors laid out their evidence. They called it a sadistic murder carried out for ‘perverted pleasure’. During the three-week trial, jurors were told that only Jack and Kayleigh knew what had occurred inside the flat that night and that they had lied consistently since then.

The defence denied murder, but evidence, including the doll, the duct tape and the vicious nature of the attack undermined their argument. Kayleigh even gave evidence, declaring that she hadn’t known of a plan to kill Bethany Hill and tried to distance herself. This didn’t fool prosecutors, though, who maintained that she had participated in the murder to please Jack.

On 25th January 2017, both Jack Williams and Kayleigh Woods were found guilty of murder. The judge sentenced them to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 26 years before they can apply for release, due to the 'cold-blooded' and brutal nature of the crime.

Aftermath and family tribute

After the sentencing, Bethany’s family issued a heartfelt tribute. They described her as someone full of life and warmth, whose future was stolen in a senseless act of violence. They also expressed profound grief that her killers didn’t show any remorse.

The community echoed that sentiment, shocked by the extreme nature of the crime. From the bizarre clues left behind, like the Barbie doll, to the fractured accounts given by the defendants, this case has stayed in public memory as one of the most disturbing killings in recent UK history.
