The occurence of teenagers committing murder is explored in depth by Laura Whitmore in her new Crime+Investigation series, Britain's Killer Teens. One of the cases included in the series is that of Logan MacPhail and Holly Newton.

The murder of Holly Newton is a disturbing case of jealousy and obsession. On 27th January 2023, Holly was stabbed multiple times and killed by her ex-boyfriend Logan MacPhail. Let’s dive deeper into this tragic case.

Who was Holly Newton?

Holly was a regular teenage girl living her life with her family in Haltwhistle, Northumberland, in England. Holly was described by her mother, Micala Trussler, as happy, funny and beautiful. She was also a sporty teenager who loved dancing, was a good, quiet student and an animal fan who adored her pet cat.

Holly Newton and Logan MacPhail

Holly’s sporty nature led her to join the Army cadets, which is where she met Logan MacPhail, who was 16 at the time. The two began a relationship, and everything seemed normal. Holly’s mum recounted how they were a happy teenage couple, and how Holly would help MacPhail with reading problems and his speech issues.

It didn’t take long for MacPhail’s behaviour to become obsessive and fuelled by jealousy. Trussler later noted that this was particularly concerning, saying that MacPhail, 'needed to know where she was all the time'. MacPhail’s controlling behaviour extended even further, as he was able to access and change Holly’s social media passwords.

After 18 months, Holly was ready to end the relationship. His obsession only seemed to intensify, and he did not want to accept their breakup. MacPhail sent messages to those close to Holly to try and get her to meet him under false pretences. Holly was so concerned that she ended up texting a friend to share her worries that she was being stalked by MacPhail.

The murder of Holly Newton

On 26th January, 2023, MacPhail had to be escorted home by police after turning up at Holly’s house in Haltwhistle. It was the following day that he took her life. A meeting was set up for 4pm on 27th January between Holly, the police and her parents. It was meant to be regarding their fears surrounding MacPhail’s behaviour. However, Holly requested that it be pushed back so she could spend time with friends after school. Holly’s mother would come to regret rescheduling the meeting for the rest of her life, calling it her 'biggest mistake'.

Just after 5pm that day, a few hours before the meeting, Holly was waiting for a friend outside of a local pizza shop. MacPhail approached Holly, asking to speak with her. He led her down an alleyway, where he proceeded to stab her multiple times with a concealed kitchen knife.

Holly’s friend bravely attempted to intervene, receiving four serious stab wounds in the process, but ultimately surviving the attack. Holly was not so lucky. MacPhail stabbed Holly 36 times in less than a minute. Holly died of her severe injuries despite medical professionals' attempts to save her.

The arrest trial of Logan MacPhail

MacPhail was arrested instantly at the scene after passersby restrained him. He was described as being 'calm and emotionless'. This attitude remained throughout the interview process. When told that he was facing murder charges, MacPhail’s response was simply, 'Is she dead?'

There was some controversy surrounding how long the case took to go to trial. This was because MacPhail’s lawyers claimed that he was not fit to stand trial due to a low IQ, autism and learning difficulties.

MacPhail himself admitted manslaughter, but denied that he intended to murder Holly. He also argued that he had planned to kill himself and had blacked out during the attack. These claims were rejected by the jury.

18 months after Holly’s murder, in August 2024, Logan MacPhail was found guilty or murder and wounding with intent. He was given a life sentence with a 17 year minimum prison term.

Holly did not have the chance to grow up due to the obsessions of a young man who thought he was entitled to her life and future. If he couldn't have Holly, then no one could. His selfish actions took away a loving daughter and friend, and our thoughts go out to her loved ones.
