Flash Shelton: Who is the 'Squatter Hunter'?
SquattersNot long ago, Flash Shelton was a California handyman posting DIY tips on YouTube. Today, the 59-year-old travels the United States in body armour, helping desperate homeowners reclaim their properties from squatters.
But who is the man behind the mission?
It was a personal crisis that changed everything. In 2023, Shelton revealed to his subscribers the ordeal of trying to evict squatters from his mother's home — and the response was overwhelming. Suddenly, a handyman had become something else entirely: a 'Squatter Hunter'.

From family crisis to unlikely career
Most people never imagine they'll make a career out of removing squatters from other people's homes. For California-native Flash Shelton, it wasn't something he planned. It was something the YouTuber fell into after his own family found themselves in a tricky situation.
Shelton's mother moved out of the family home in 2019, following the death of her husband. Before the house could be sold, squatters moved in and claimed the right to stay. When Shelton contacted police, he says he was told there was little they could do because the dispute was considered a civil matter rather than a criminal one.
‘I called the sheriff,’ Shelton recalls. ‘The sheriff informed me, “it's a civil matter, and there's nothing we can do.”’
Flash knew he had to take matters into his own hands.
Rather than accept defeat, Shelton began researching squatter laws, tenant rights and legal loopholes. Soon, he developed a strategy that would not only help his own family reclaim their property but also, unbeknownst to him, eventually launch an entirely new career
How Flash Shelton became 'The Squatter Hunter’
Shelton already had a YouTube channel called ‘Outside the Box with Flash’, which he used to post handyman tips and general content. However, his vision shifted in 2023.
Flash started documenting the process of removing the squatters that had taken over his mother’s home. His subscriber count has increased dramatically to over 100,000 since 2020. The story he shared online had gone viral, attracting millions of views and messages from homeowners across the country facing similar situations.
Many told Flash that they’d spent months battling professional squatters in court, often while continuing to pay mortgages, bills and insurance. All for houses they couldn’t access. It didn’t seem right, and they needed help.
This is where Flash comes in.
Outsmarting the squatters
But what did the Squatter Hunter do to get these strangers out? He outsmarted them.
One of the main reasons Shelton has gained such a loyal following is that he doesn’t use force; he relies on the law. His approach is built around understanding exactly what he can and can’t do legally.
If a homeowner grants him permission to occupy the property, Shelton effectively becomes a lawful resident himself. Rather than trying to physically remove squatters, he moves in alongside them and makes life uncomfortable enough that they eventually choose to leave.
His philosophy is simple, ‘If they can take a house, I can take a house.’
It's a tactic Shelton refers to as ‘out squatting the squatter’, and it’s become the trademark of both his work and the television series.
As Flash tells it, ‘What I used to save my mom's house, I am now using to help homeowners across the country.’
How he stays one step ahead of danger
While each episode has its share of unexpected twists, the work itself is anything but simple.
Many of the people Shelton encounters refuse to leave voluntarily. Some become aggressive, while others claim to have legitimate tenancy agreements or produce paperwork that homeowners insist is fraudulent. Arguments are common, and police are frequently called to the scene.
The key? Preparation is everything, according to Flash.
He researches every property before arriving, studies local laws and works with a trusted team that includes family members. His sister, Justice, regularly joins him on operations and has become a familiar face on the series.
Why Flash Shelton is fighting to change the system
For the ex-bouncer, however, helping frustrated homeowners is only part of his mission.
Flash also wants to shine a light on what he sees as flaws in the legal system surrounding squatting. Through his social media channels, interviews and television appearances, Shelton argues that many property owners are unaware of how complicated it can become once someone has established residency inside a home.
‘I believe that I have been able to bring awareness to something that's been happening for decades,’ he said while promoting his new TV series.
