Stephanie Hansen: Murdered by her controlling housemate
Some cases are difficult to process, not because they’re unfamiliar, but because they can happen a little too close to home. For Stephanie Hansen, home was meant to be a place of stability and comfort.
Sadly, this was not the case. In December 2022, Stephanie, who lived in Hayes, West London, was killed by her housemate, Sheldon Rodrigues, after repeatedly turning down his advances.

A shift beneath the surface
Stephanie had known Sheldon Rodrigues for several years through work, and over time, they’d built a steady, uncomplicated relationship. When they eventually decided to move in together in Hayes, it was seen as a practical step, shaped by rising living costs and familiarity.
For Stephanie, it was simply a shared living arrangement between two people who knew each other well enough to coexist comfortably. For Rodrigues, however, that closeness carried a different weight, shaped by feelings that had grown into something less platonic.
Although Stephanie had been clear about her boundaries, Rodrigues struggled to accept the relationship as purely a friendship. What may have initially appeared as persistence or misplaced affection gradually developed into something more sinister on Rodrigues’ part. Rather than stepping back from Stephanie, he became increasingly focused on her life, relationships and her daily routines.
Behind closed doors
The change in the housemate’s relationship became more apparent behind closed doors when Rodrigues installed covert surveillance devices throughout the home.
This allowed him to listen to Stephanie’s private conversations without her knowledge. Over time, he spent hours monitoring her, quietly building a detailed and deeply intrusive picture of her personal life. It was a level of control that extended far beyond curiosity, moving into something far scarier.
At the same time, Rodrigues’ attention turned outward. When Stephanie began a new relationship, his behaviour expanded to include her partner, whom he subjected to stalking. He sent messages under false identities, contacted their workplace and even paid someone to follow him. Much of this remained hidden from Stephanie, unfolding in parallel to her everyday life.
The night of the attack
By late December 2022, the situation had reached a point where the gap between reality and Rodrigues’ expectations had become impossible for him to reconcile. Stephanie had moved forward with her life, forming a new relationship and maintaining the boundaries. For Rodrigues, however, this intensified his obsession.
On the night of 29th December, while working near Heathrow Airport, he remotely accessed the surveillance devices inside their home. Through them, he listened as Stephanie spent time with her boyfriend. What followed was not impulsive in the usual sense, but part of a pattern of behaviour that had been building over time.
The next day, Rodrigues returned to the house and went directly to Stephanie’s bedroom. She was still in her pyjamas when he attacked her. The violence that followed was prolonged and deeply personal, involving repeated stabbing and the use of objects, including a hairdryer and tower fan. Hansen sustained multiple injuries.
The evidence and investigation
In the aftermath, Rodrigues attempted to present an alternative version of events, suggesting that Stephanie’s boyfriend was responsible for the attack. It introduced some uncertainty. However, as investigators began to examine the evidence more closely, that version of events quickly unravelled.
CCTV footage, forensic analysis and digital records all pointed toward a different conclusion. Rodrigues’ movements before and after the attack, along with inconsistencies in his account, raised immediate concerns. The injuries he had sustained, initially explained as unrelated, were shown through footage to have occurred around the time of the murder.
But it was the hidden surveillance devices inside the home that became a key part of the investigation. They revealed not only the extent of his monitoring but also the level of planning and fixation that had developed. What Rodrigues had attempted to conceal became some of the strongest evidence against him, providing investigators with a clear picture of the events leading up to Stephanie’s death.
Conviction and sentencing
In March 2024, Sheldon Rodrigues was convicted of Stephanie Hansen’s murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 25 years. In court, Hanson’s family spoke about the profound impact of her loss, describing not only the person she was but the future that had been taken from them.
'You took her life and you stole her future.' Glenda, Stephanie Hansen’s mother told Rodrigues.
