A killer next door: The murder of Lauren Giddings

27-year-old Lauren Giddings was a hardworking law student at Mercer University, about to start a legal career as a defense attorney. That is, until she crossed paths with fellow student Stephen McDaniel.

Described as an incel, McDaniel hid in plain sight until he strangled Lauren in her apartment in June 2011. The case would later become famous thanks to a live television interview capturing McDaniel’s reaction after learning Lauren's dismembered body had been discovered.

Crime+Investigation examines the case that shocked the legal community – how a quiet neighbour harboured a deadly obsession, and the live television interview that brought it to light.

Who was Lauren Giddings?

Everyone who met Lauren couldn’t help but like her.

The bubbly 27-year-old was the eldest of three sisters and the first in her family to attend college. Her parents, Bill and Karen Giddings, raised their daughters on a peaceful property in Howard County, surrounded by farmyard animals and rolling countryside.

Life was about as perfect as it could be until that fateful night on Sunday, 26th June 2011.

After graduating from high school, Lauren found her passion for law and enrolled at Mercer University. This is where she would meet McDaniel, a quiet neighbour who would later become the focus of a murder investigation.

Relationship with McDaniel

Lauren and McDaniel were never close, but she was always kind to him. They both lived at Barristers Hall, a small apartment complex popular with Mercer law students. The neighbourhood was generally considered safe, with quiet avenues and expensive homes.

Karen remembered McDaniel from when she helped her daughter move in: 'I remember him coming up the stairs. He was so awkward and shy. He almost jumped 10 feet'.

He was a misfit, but Lauren chose to see the best in him, regularly encouraging him to step outside his comfort zone. The pair joined Mercer’s Federalist Society in their first year of law school, with Lauren serving as President and McDaniel as Vice President.

The disappearance

Shortly before her disappearance, Lauren had attended her sister’s wedding. She had told friends and family that she would dedicate herself to her studies when she returned to Mercer, ahead of the Georgia Bar Exam.

Consequently, Lauren’s family weren’t immediately concerned when they didn’t hear from her. They simply assumed she was busy revising.

However, everything changed on 29th June 2011. Lori Suspic had tried to text and call her friend several times, but couldn’t get through. She always answered quickly. Lori later told reporters, 'I called her phone after work, and it was off. I immediately got that feeling that something was wrong.'

Lori alerted Bill and Karen. Bill immediately drove to Mercer to file a missing persons report.

Shortly after, Lauren’s friends, including McDaniel, entered her apartment using a spare key. There was no sign of a struggle, but Lauren’s keys, purse and phone were there. The police began an official search the same day, but wouldn’t make much progress until a discovery outside Barristers Hall the next morning.

A disturbing discovery live on air

The next morning, reporters flocked to Lauren’s apartment complex to cover her disappearance. When they arrived, McDaniel agreed to give a live interview on WGXA. He expressed concern about Lauren and seemed genuinely worried.

However, his demeanour suddenly changed when reporters were told that Lauren’s dismembered torso had been found in a dumpster beside the building. Visibly shaken, he staggered away to compose himself.

His odd behaviour drew the attention of investigators, who asked to search his apartment. He agreed, but only if he was present the whole time. They also noticed that he had fresh scratch marks on his stomach, consistent with someone inflicting defensive wounds.

Suspecting his involvement, they arrested McDaniel on unrelated charges while they built a stronger case against him.

Investigation and trial

In August, investigators had gathered enough evidence to charge McDaniel with murder. They found the hacksaw he had used to dismember Lauren’s body, videos on his laptop mapping her movements and conversations on Internet forums expressing his hatred towards women.

We explore several cases like this in our docuseries Last Night Out, which reconstructs the final hours of ordinary evenings that begin with joy but end in tragedy. Lauren’s evening should have ended like any other, but fuelled by an unhealthy obsession, McDaniel murdered her instead.

In 2014, McDaniel accepted a plea deal. The deal required him to describe his account of the murder. In exchange, he would receive life imprisonment and avoid the death penalty.
