In July 1966, Richard Speck broke into a townhouse where student nurses from the South Chicago University Hospital lived. As they returned home one by one, Speck tied eight of the women up before raping and murdering them. The sheer randomness of the attack shocked the nation.

The following year he was sentenced to death; however, this sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. Speck died on 5th December 1991, the day before his 50th birthday, after suffering a heart attack.
