Predator Files: Who is Ariel Winter?
Ariel Winter might be best known to many people as the quick-witted, lovable Alex Dunphy from the hit sitcom Modern Family, but in recent years, she has taken on a role far removed from scripted comedy.
She has stepped into the world of real-life danger and investigation, using her platform and personal experiences to confront a very serious issue, online sexual abuse. Her journey from child actor to advocate with the non-profit organisation Safe from Online Sex Abuse (SOSA) is deeply personal and truly telling.
In Crime+Investigation’s latest series, Predator Files, Ariel shares a deeply personal story of her own experiences with male predators during her time as a young actor. Read on to learn how this led to becoming an advocate and her role on the SOSA Undercover YouTube channel.
From child star to advocate
So, what made Ariel pivot from well-known child star to an advocate for online abuse? The actor began her career in Hollywood at a very young age, appearing in commercials as early as four and landed her breakthrough role as Alex Dunphy at only 11.
For more than a decade she grew up on television screens as part of a beloved ensemble on Modern Family. Even as she navigated fame, however, she experienced parts of the entertainment industry that would leave lasting emotional scars. She later shared how male predators targeted her when she was still very young, both in person and online, long before she fully understood what was happening to her.
These experiences deeply affected Ariel and were traumatic enough that she sought therapy as an adult to work through the impact they had on her life. The entertainment world that brought her early success also exposed her to behaviours she describes as predatory and damaging.
A dark place
Ariel has described the entertainment industry as a 'dark place' for young actors, pointing to how inappropriate messages and unwanted attention from older men began early once she had access to a laptop and phone. She has said that these experiences 'affected her so deeply'
It was this painful personal history that eventually led her to a purpose far beyond Hollywood. Instead of shying away from her past or allowing it to define her in isolation, Winter chose to confront the issues she lived through by helping others.
What is SOSA?
Ariel's involvement with the non-profit Safe from Online Sex Abuse, often abbreviated as SOSA, began after watching a television show documenting undercover sting operations targeting online predators.
SOSA is a nonprofit organisation that collaborates with law enforcement to identify and arrest people who seek to exploit children online. It conducts undercover operations where decoys pose as minors to lure out predators and gather evidence that can be passed along to authorities. The group also advocates for legislation, educates parents and communities, and offers support for survivors.
Moved by what she saw and motivated by her own past, Ariel reached out to SOSA to see how she could help. Her involvement has evolved from volunteering to joining undercover sting operations herself. She has taken part in missions that involve creating realistic online decoy personas, preparing staged rooms and interacting with individuals who believe they are communicating with minors.
By working with law enforcement and seasoned investigators, the actor-slash-advocate helps ensure that predators are identified and stopped.
Emotional toll
Taking a deep dive into the past will be emotionally exhausting for anyone. But how does taking part in these missions affect Ariel Winter?
The actor told news outlets: 'It can be scary at times pretending to be 12 and talking to older men, but it’s validating to put away predators that have been harming children.'
Ariel has also stated that the work can trigger past trauma. However, at the same time, she finds the work meaningful because it helps put real predators behind bars and raises awareness about a threat that is often hidden in plain sight.
