The Jackal was already retired, when he was called to account for his career as an international mercenary. Without the protection of what are now termed ‘rogue states’, the playboy idealist found himself very vulnerable.
The French charged him with three murders, two of which were policemen. There was no doubt over his guilt and he was deluded to believe that mounting his own defence would be advantageous.
But prison wouldn’t prohibit just one more marriage for this flawed revolutionary...
