Five years of terror in the northeast of England were brought to an end on this day in 1981 with the charging of Peter Sutcliffe.

Claiming to be acting upon a call from God, Sutcliffe set out on a haphazard killing spree with the aim of ridding the world of prostitutes.

His eventual arrest owed a great deal to good fortune.
