'We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.' The motto of the notorious hacking group known as ‘Anonymous'.

But who are Anonymous? And why are they so infamous?

This decentralised hacktivist collective, has been a prominent figure in the digital world since its emergence in the early 2000s.

They’re known for their Guy Fawkes mask symbol and high-profile cyberattacks targeting governments, corporations, and other organisations worldwide. Join us at Crime+Investigation as we delve into how the group formed, its most notorious hacks, and what it might be working on now.

The origins of Anonymous

Anonymous originated in 2003 on the imageboard 4chan, where users would post anonymously — hence the group’s name.

The collective's first significant public operation was in 2008, when it targeted the Church of Scientology in what was dubbed 'Project Chanology'.

This protest involved a series of actions, including distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, prank calls and the dissemination of protest videos, highlighting the group's commitment to opposing censorship and promoting freedom of information.

Notable operations

Over the years, Anonymous has been involved in various high-profile operations, and in some instances, the collective has attended various in-person events. Here are some notable operations the collective has been involved with.

Operation Payback (2010)

Initially targeting anti-piracy organisations, this operation expanded to include attacks on entities that oppose WikiLeaks, such as PayPal, Visa, and MasterCard.

Arab Spring (2011)

Anonymous supported pro-democracy movements in the Middle East and North Africa by attacking government websites and assisting activists circumventing censorship.

Operation Ferguson (2014)

In response to the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, Anonymous launched cyberattacks against local government and police department websites, advocating for justice and transparency.

Recent activities and group resurgence

While Anonymous's prominence waned in the late 2010s, the group re-emerged in response to global events. So, if you’ve been wondering where they’ve been, don’t worry. The hacktivist group has been busy over the last few years, just, well, anonymously.

Here are a few movements Anonymous have been involved in:

George Floyd protests (2020)

The brutal attack on George Floyd still sends shockwaves around the world today. Several high-profile protests took place. But how were Anonymous involved?

The hacking group released a video condemning police brutality and was linked to cyberattacks on the Minneapolis Police Department's website following George Floyd's death.

Russian Invasion of Ukraine (2022)

Anonymous declared a cyberwar against Russia, claiming responsibility for attacks on Russian government websites, state media and leaking sensitive data to support Ukraine.

Israeli-Palestinian conflict (2023-2024)

The group conducted cyber operations against Israeli digital infrastructure, including a DDoS attack on Israel's Red Alert app and threats to release data from the Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Center

A decline in visibility

The group were quite prominent for a while and made sure to make their presence known. However, over time, their operations declined in visibility. This was due to several factors, including a decentralised structure. The lack of a formal hierarchy makes coordinated actions challenging and leads to fragmentation.

Legal actions caused more roadblocks for the collective, with law enforcement agencies around the world arresting individuals associated with Anonymous. This led to a more cautious approach among members.

Since Anonymous began, new hacktivist groups with specific agendas have also emerged, capturing public attention and overshadowing Anonymous’ activities.

However, this doesn’t mean the group is lying dormant.

The future of Anonymous

Despite having a lower profile recently, Anonymous remains active, especially in responding to significant global events. The collective's adaptability and commitment to its core principles suggest it will remain relevant in digital activism.

As technology continues to evolve rapidly and new challenges arise, Anonymous is likely to continue its operations, advocating for transparency, freedom of information and social justice.
