Manson needed murders to start an apocalyptic race war named after the Beatles song ‘Helter-Skelter’. The Tate-La Bianca killings had graffiti written in the victims’ blood which was meant to suggest the killers were black.
Police persecution of the black community during the subsequent investigation would start a race war which would wipe out all the whites.
