The Nobel Peace Prize winning Dr King used non-violent direct action campaigns to end America’s apartheid. Deliberately emulating Gandhi’s successful securing of Indian independence, Dr King suffered the same fate as his hero when he was shot in a motel in 1968.
The alleged assassin, James Earl Ray, died of liver disease still saying there had been a conspiracy. Some of King’s family, an FBI agent, and a motel neighbour backed him but an inquiry, two years after his death, found no evidence.
