Her defence team had attempted a deal where Wuornos would plead guilty in exchange for life imprisonment. Their strategy wasn’t helped by their client’s death wish and she eventually fired them. Considering her life, a desire for death was perhaps a rational response.
She certainly demonstrated she was capable of making comprehensible choices when she chose to die by lethal injection rather than the demanded electrocution.
Whether she was still sane by the time of the execution is less clear...
