Stolen from Paris, the Mona Lisa is found in Florence hotel

It had taken over 24 hours for anyone to realise the most famous painting in the world had been stolen.

When security had seen it was missing they assumed it had been taken to be photographed.

It was when the thief, Vincenzo Peruggia, took the stolen masterpiece for authentication before an illegal sale, that the art dealer decided instead to turn him over to the police.
