The Cold War claimed another victim on this day when the Bulgarian defector Georgi Markov died of blood poisoning. The Ian Fleming style assassination actually occurred four days previously at a London bus stop.

Markov was waiting for a bus on Waterloo Bridge when he suddenly felt a pain in his leg. He turned and saw a man pick up and umbrella and leave.

It wasn’t until 2005 that leaked files revealed his assassin to be Bulgarian secret service.
