‘Captain Blood’, was in fact, a Colonel. His rank came during the English Civil War where he switched sides from Charles I to Cromwell. He was rewarded with land in Ireland.
When Charles II took power, he took these away and so Blood tried and failed to take Dublin Castle to start a rebellion.
Dressed as clergy, his attempt to steal the Crown Jewels was also foiled.
But Charles II admired the rebel’s exploits and so restored Blood’s lands; proving that sometimes, crime does, indirectly, pay.
