When the pretty daughter of attractive middle class couple the McCann’s disappeared in Portugal, the British media went mad.

When the Portuguese police named the mother Kate as an ‘aguida’, a suspect, many of the tabloids treated this as proof of her guilt. Kate and later her husband were vilified.

A year later, one newspaper group would pay £550,000 over these allegations.
