The robbers knew that the Glasgow-to-London mail train carried more money after a Bank Holiday Monday. They all left their homes on the Tuesday and met at a farmhouse.

At 10pm on the Wednesday the call came through confirming the mail train had become a money train. At around 3:30am on Thursday morning the unarmed robbery started.
