A British backpacker had had a lucky escape three years earlier and the discovery of a series of bodies showed how fatal his encounter with Ivan Milat could have been.
Two of the first victims showed similar spinal injuries to a second set of bodies. These four bodies initiated a month long search which ended with the discovery of German Simon Schmidl displaying the same back injuries.
