![]() Until the 1950's, Cherry Hill was little more than farmland but the town grew quickly and became known for its large Jewish community and its entertainment. In 1973, Fred Neulander and his wife Carol started their own congregation called M'kor Shalom or Source of Peace. By 1990, it had grown to include 500 families and moved to a spacious building in Cherry Hill. While Fred grew the congregation, Carol was building her own business, Classic Cake Company, into a thriving enterprise.
Spiritually and financially successful, the Neulanders were a model to their congregation. Len Jenoff was a deeply troubled alcoholic whose life was most notable for its failures. Despite his problems, rabbi Neulander took Jenoff under his wing, even hiring him as a security consultant. But whose security he was protecting was a question that would come to haunt Cherry Hill. On 1 November 1994, Fred Neulander came home and found Carol facedown on the living room floor. Blood was splattered throughout the room. She had been brutally beaten to death with a blunt object. It wasn’t until June 2000 that Fred Neulander was arrested for arranging his wife's murder. Police believed the rabbi had paid Len Jenoff and an associate $3,000 dollars to kill Carol so that he could continue an affair with Philadelphia talk show host Elaine Soncini. Neulander’s trial began in the summer of 2001, with the main piece of evidence against him being the testimony of Len Jenoff, who had copped a plea. Unfortunately for the prosecution, some members of the jury had trouble believing the testimony of an admitted alcoholic and pathological liar and the courtroom drama ended with a mistrial. In 2002, Neulander’s second trial began, this time with his children testifying for the prosecution. On 16 January 2003, Rabbi Fred Neulander was sentenced to life in prison. His security consultant Len Jenoff is currently serving 23 years. SPECIAL FEATURES
