Cold Case Files: Episode 106

The Sunday Morning Slasher
In the spring and autumn of 1980, there are three similar homicide cases in Ann Arbor, Michigan, of women stabbed in the chest whilst walking home on Sunday mornings. Three months later, Detroit Police hear news of the killings and immediately recognise the M.O. as that of Coral Eugene Watts, a prime suspect in an unsolved Kalamazoo murder. After comparing notes, detectives agree their cities' cases may be linked and place Watts under surveillance. When the Sunday Morning Slashings subside, the police curtail their surveillance.

In 1981, Watts moves to Houston, Texas but keeps a low profile. However, in May 1982, two more women are attacked at their Houston apartment and nearly killed. Police arrest a man running from the apartment, and the women identifies him as their attacker - his name is Coral Eugene Watts. Watts is charged with 2 counts of attempted murder and faces a possible life sentence. He decides he wants to make a deal and tells police that he will come clean about a dozen murders in exchange for an immunity deal. The Harris County DA's Office agrees. Watts is given the maximum sentence of 60 years in prison and is not charged with any of the murders to which he confessed.
