The city of Portland, used to embracing diversity, found itself wrapped in a neo-nazi nightmare in 1988. This is the story of Ethiopian Mulugeta Seraw, who escaped his homeland to pursue the American Dream. Unfortunately he was chosen by a group of skinheads, as someone upon whom to vent their anger and hate, and Seraw was beaten to death outside his apartment on 12 November 1988.

The perpetrators were part of a neo-nazi group, called East Side White Pride, and included Ken Mieske and Dave Mazzella, Of the three who were caught, Mieske received a life sentence, Mazzella and the other accomplice, 20 years each. In a wrongful death trial in 1990, Seraw's family filed a $10 million suit against Tom Metzger, a California based white supremacist who had given Mazella the orders to stir things up in Portland. The jury awarded Seraw's family $12.5 million and were successful in ruining the white supremacy group. The judgment also allowed Seraw's son to come to America.
