In October of 1991, 8 year-old Chad Choice was taken from his home in Marshall, Texas, while asleep in his mother's home. The next morning, Chad's mother phones police telling them her son is missing. Later that afternoon, the Choice family receives a ransom note commanding them to pay a fee and Chad will be released. However, when the family makes an attempt to pay the ransom, it appears that Chad's captor has left the vicinity – and with him, young Chad Choice.

Months go by and there is no sign of missing Chad Choice in the Texas area. Local authorities and the FBI work the case, but to no avail, Chad is not found. Then, on the year anniversary of Chad's disappearance, another ransom note is received by the family-claiming that Chad is still alive. Choice's family and authorities working the case make yet another effort to pay the ransom and catch Chad's captor. Once again, the kidnapper fails to show, and once again, the case into the disappearance of Chad Choice goes cold.

In 1995, on the anniversary of Choice's death, the family still hoping that young Chad is still alive receives a letter in the mail along with a skull. Forensics later determines that the skull is that of Chad Choice and detectives are now on the hunt for a kidnapper turned killer.

With the help of a bank-robber turned informant, the case heats up as detectives dig up the back yard of Keithan Patrick Horn, a family friend of the Choice family. In Horn's yard, they unearth the bones of Chad Choice and press charges against Horn who claims that he took the life of young Chad to gain allegiance into a local gang. Horn is now sitting on death-row in Texas.
