Thursday 29 Jan 11.00AM

An innocent picnic near a river, a religious retreat and a bizarre plot that spiralled out of control. These are the events surrounding the murder of Charla Toma.

US Coastguardsman Ricky Dale Hemphill and companion Charla Toma set out for a picnic along a river near Brookings, Oregon in the autumn of 1979.

A day later Ricky was found murdered and Charla was missing. A tip from a local hunter led police to Edward Delen Warren, a former convict, in the area trying to set up a religious retreat. What police uncovered was a bizarre plot that would soon spiral out of control.
