Claire Welsh was the All-American girl; a high school cheerleader, prom queen and valedictorian who went on to get a master’s degree in physical therapy. However, she could not seem to master her personal life.

She went through a series of bad relationships before meeting teacher, John Mileski, at a friend’s wedding in 1995. The two started dating and this time Claire was determined she would keep her man or die trying.

The more John tried to pull away, the tighter Claire held on. He told friends it was a 'fatal attraction situation' and feared what Claire would do if he broke up with her. On 11th January 1997 John reached his breaking point and so did Claire.

After John told Claire it was over, she bought a handgun and converted her wedding plans to funeral arrangements. In the early hours of 12th January 1997, she shot John in the back of the head as he slept, then shot herself in the chest.

Claire survived the wound and when police found a 'to do' list that included sending flowers to John’s mother after his death, they put her under arrest for murder.

At her trial in 1998, Claire pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity but the jury did not buy it. She was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

In 2003 the Colorado Supreme court granted Claire a new trial on appeal but the second jury agreed with the first. She was found guilty again and is currently serving a life sentence at the Colorado Women’s Correctional Facility.
