Crime and Punishment: Daughter Dearest
Coming Soon

It's a scenario every parent fears: Your teenage daughter is hanging out with older guys, doing drugs, having sex. This scenario played out with single mother, Vicki Robinson, who struggled against this teenage rebellion with her 15-year-old daughter, Valessa. But their clash eventually crossed a frightening line. It ended with Vicki murdered and a disturbing confession from Valessa, her daughter.

Ultimately, a jury would have to decide if Valessa was somehow a victim, trapped by the influence of others, or was she actually the mastermind of her mother's murder? This episode examines the relationship between mother and daughter, trying to determine how and why a young girl could take part in her own mother's brutal death.

On 27 June 1998 in Tampa, Florida, 49-year-old Vicki Robinson missed an early morning appointment with her best friend. She also missed a date at the beach later that afternoon with her boyfriend of two years, Jim Englert. Her friends became concerned as Vicki was the type of woman who always returned calls and was never late. By that evening, Englert called police, telling them about Vicki and Valessa's often combative relationship as well as the fact that Vicki didn't approve of her daughter's boyfriend, Adam Davis. He also told them Valessa had even threatened Vicki, saying that if she tried to break them up, Valessa knew people who could hurt her.

Six days later Valessa and her boyfriend, Adam, were arrested after a high-speed chase in West Texas. They had fled the state of Florida with another friend, Jon Whispel, after the three realized they were wanted by police. This intriguing case hinges on three confessions with striking differences. One would eventually make a deal with the prosecution, another would get the death penalty. When it came to Valessa, a daughter accused of brutally murdering her own mother, the jury faced a difficult decision.
