The Herb Baumeister Killings (Solved Case)
In the early 1990s, young men in and around the city of Indianapolis began disappearing, never to be heard from again. Neither the police nor the local media paid much attention, until private investigator Virgil Vandagriff came forward with his suspicion that a serial killer was stalking the streets of Middle America. Though the investigation that followed exemplified both the best and worst in police work, it eventually led to the home of Herb Baumeister. The sprawling, suburban estate known as Fox Hollow Farm had a lush, 18-acre lawn, a dozen rooms, an indoor pool and thousands of human bones buried in the backyard. With an arrest imminent, Baumeister fled the country and took his life, leaving many to wonder what precipitated his descent into madness and murder. The Gardner Museum Heist (Unsolved Case) In the dead of night on March 18, 1990, Boston's Elizabeth Stewart Gardner Museum fell victim to one of history's biggest art heists. Two thieves duped guards and the museum's security system and made off with more than $300 million in rare masterpieces by the likes of Rembrandt, Degas and Manet. An FBI task force was set up to investigate the record-breaking theft. The thieves left no fingerprints and even had the foresight to swipe the surveillance tape. Thousands of leads poured in. Agents scoured the country and eventually the world, checking into the possible involvement of organized crime families, foreign governments and even terrorists. It wasn't until the reward money was increased to $5 million, however, that two men with criminal pasts called a local reporter with an offer to broker a deal and solve a mystery that had baffled the FBI's most seasoned agents. The government, though, refused to negotiate, and to this day the whereabouts of the art and the thieves remain unknown. The Gardner Museum heist is a picture-perfect crime. SPECIAL FEATURES
