The John List Murders (Solved Case)
Westfield, NJ was a quiet suburban town where no one locked their doors at night. That peaceful existence ended on November 9, 1971, when a polite, God-fearing man named John List brutally murdered his entire family. The bodies of his wife, mother, and children went undiscovered for nearly a month, leaving plenty of time for the killer to get away. Police found the gruesome scene after a friend became concerned for the missing family. But a search of the surrounding area proved that the murderer was long gone. List fled to Denver and established a new identity, complete with a new name, a new job, and even a new wife. For almost 20 years, he succeeded in pulling off this crime, until the technological expertise of Frank Bender and the popularity of a television show finally ferreted him out. Had it not been for this fortuitous turn of events, John List may have gotten away with five unspeakable acts of murder. The Green River Killer (Unsolved Case) In the summer of 1982, the body of a woman was found floating in Washington State's Green River with a pair of pants knotted tightly around her neck. Over the next month, the bodies of four more women were found in and around the river, initiating a famously unsuccessful investigation that netted few suspects and no arrests. Over the next four years, police found the bodies of 49 women, mostly prostitutes who worked the notorious Sea-Tac Strip, just south of Seattle. Millions of dollars would be spent by police in a fruitless effort to track down the prolific killer. With their investigation stalled, police actually turned to convicted serial killer Ted Bundy for help. To this day, the Green River killings remain one of the most chilling murder mysteries in history. Although the murders ended abruptly in 1984, the search continues and police vow they will one day catch the killer and close a chapter that has haunted the Pacific Northwest for close to two decades.
