‘Lucky’ Holzapfel’s luck, little that it is, runs out when he’s arrested. After three days of drinking, he confesses to two undercover police that he had been hired by crooked Judge Joseph Peel to kill Judge Chillingworth. Holzapfel, a Second World War veteran and armed robber, had killed both the judge and his wife. Peel needed the judge dead because Chillingworth was likely to disbar him.
