The brutal terrorist campaign by Irish Republicans against the equally brutal occupation of the English army, euphemistically known as 'The Troubles', exploded again onto the world’s front pages.

This was not the first time Republicans had managed to escape with 30 tunnelling their way out in 1974. This time, they used smuggled knives to stab their way out, killing one officer.

Ten were re-captured quickly, with four of them found to be hiding underwater using reeds to breathe. Many were never caught.
