The teenage outlaw killed only four men for certain and so his infamy owes much to the posthumous publishing of his biography by his killer, Sheriff Pat Garrett.

Billy’s first run in with the law was over the stealing of some cheese and one of his few legitimate jobs was later working in a cheese factory. It was through this he became involved in the ‘Lincoln County Cattle War’.

Out of the many killings that the rival ranches inflicted on each other, Billy the Kid was the only one ever convicted.
