American Charles Lindbergh was the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic and it made him a global celebrity. He married socialite Anne Morrow and the birth of their son, Charles, in 1930 was widely reported and was a welcome distraction to the world-wide Great Depression.

It was late Tuesday evening when they realised that their son was missing. At 10.25 pm Charles senior found the ransom note and despite the warning therein, he called the police.

Police and press soon swamped their home...
