The first of these stories features Melissa Dean Harris who was convicted, along with her boyfriend Earl Linebaugh, in the fatal shooting of an 84-year-old woman and her, 57-year-old caretaker. In 1995, the couple embarked on a multi-state trek from Texas to Mexico, and then to Florida.
It was there that they murdered the women, stole the caretaker’s car, and fled to Canada where they were captured. Although there were two guns involved, neither had fingerprints. Melissa says that Earl was the shooter, and that she was deathly afraid of what he would to do her and her children, so she went along with his plan. She is currently serving a life sentence in a Florida prison. Her appeals have been denied.
Angela Rocka and her friend Harold Umanzor went on a three-day drug binge. Hungry and out of cash, the two came up with a scheme to rob a young woman named Leslie who lived in their apartment complex. On the pretext of using Leslie’s phone, the two defendants entered her apartment, and then tortured and allegedly raped Leslie for several hours.
They left her to die in a closet. Leslie was rescued by her next door neighbor who heard her cries for help. She survived, but took her own life years later. Angela admits to the attack but denies any sexual assault. In 2001, she was sentenced to 60 years and is currently serving out her term in a Texas prison. Umanzor pled guilty and was sentenced to 30 years.
