Worried about the safety of your home? The Crime & Investigation Network and Greater Manchester Police have put together some top tips for keeping your home safe while you are out.

Top Ten Tips:

• Keep valuables out of sight and away from windows and doors.

• If leaving your house empty, leave a light on and consider fitting timer switches on lights – remember it may start getting dark before you return.

• Think about fitting a burglar alarm and if you have one, remember to switch it on when you go out or go to bed.

• Remove keys from locked windows and doors; take care to keep them out of sight and safe.

• Fit locks to all windows that a burglar could use and remember to keep them locked.

• Fit British Standard deadlocks to external doors and always use them.

Restricting access to your rear garden reduces your chance of suffering a burglary. Prickly plants such as roses and hawthorns can provide extra protection.

• Use or install security lighting such as motion sensor lighting.

Gravel your paths, as this is a noisy deterrent for burglars.

• Ask neighbours to keep an eye on your house and garden; offer to do the same for them in return.
