Q. What motivated you to write a crime novel? Was it difficult to find a publisher and are you planning on writing more? I was less motivated to write a crime novel than I was to simply write. I studied English literature before studying law, and my love of stories, and the world of the imagination, far predates my involvement in the world of crime and the justice system. My first two published novels have turned out to be crime novels partly because I am naturally drawn to write stories with plot, with an element of suspense and the unravelling of a puzzle. Additionally, I have drawn on subject matter which is familiar. However, there is a contradiction in crime writing. Its generic subject matter is death and the commission of evil acts, yet its categorisation as genre fiction and easy reading mean that those darkest of subjects often become sanitised. I think and hope that whatever I write in the future will have its darker aspects, and the element of suspense. But I don’t necessarily intend to limit myself to genre fiction or governing formulae. I am working on a 3rd novel at the moment – I’ll continue to write what feels interesting and exciting to me and see how it turns out! Francesca Weisman - Novelist / Criminal Lawyer |
