Q. I am having difficulty finding any information and pictures on Miss Patty Hearst when she was kidnapped and involved in that revolution. The biggest problem is that I can not remember what the group was called either. I'm so stuck in a rut at the moment. Please could you help me?

Hi,

Patricia Campbell Hearst (now Patricia Hearst Shaw) is the grand daughter of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. She was kidnapped in February 1974 by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) but was subsequently arrested after taking part in a San Francisco bank robbery (April 1974) with other members of the group.

In 1976 she was sentenced to serve seven years imprisonment but was finally granted a presidential pardon by President Clinton after serving only two.

The events involving Patty Hearst gave birth to a psychological medical condition of that name (Patty Hearst Condition) which is closely associated with the ‘Stockholm Syndrome’.

This condition relates to circumstances where the victim either through contact with and indoctrination by her captives, or through acquiescence borne of self preservation, sympathises with the captives and thereby submits to whatever course of action they are asked or told to take part in.

Look at another interesting case involving a very brave young lady called Stephanie Slater (Regina Vs Michael Sams) and you will identify many similarities.

Hope this helps!
