Q. Working separately from the FBI, or any other agency, must be difficult. How does one become established and gain respect in such a career? Do you have any tips and tricks for those who are interested in profiling?
When I began my work, the word "profiling" did not exist. Now, there are many criminal justice college programs. Often those with an advanced professional degree in psychology are hired by agencies to do these studies. You are correct that doing it on ones' own is very difficult. First of all, many agencies of the law do not respect anyone outside their own territories. Local agencies do not want the FBI to interfere and the FBI often does not want anyone who is not with them to ‘freelance’. Often, the profile has little or no success in apprehending a criminal. I suppose my advice is find what you want to do, approach it as more of an academic exercise, build your own reputation with the help of your local agencies, and expect that as a woman you will have to jump through more "hoops" than your male colleagues!
