British Urban Film Festival

Organisers of the British Urban Film Festival have confirmed that "Damilola: Death of a 10 year old" will be screening at its annual showpiece on Saturday 17 September.

Originally screened by Crime & Investigation Network® in 2010, this event marks the first public screening of the documentary and will also feature a Q&A with broadcaster Henry Bonsu, Richard Taylor OBE and Gary Trowsdale from the Damilola Taylor Trust.

Former Metropolitan Police Officer and TV Presenter Rav Wilding re-traces the story of Damilola Taylor, the young boy who bled to death in a stairwell on a South London estate. The schoolboy died on 27 November 2000, just a few months after arriving in Britain from his home country of Nigeria. Several young boys were cleared of murder charges after a lengthy trial, and two brothers were later convicted of his manslaughter.

Rav was a police officer working on the investigation into Damilola's killing and it remains his most vivid memory of his time with 'the Met'. Over a decade on, Rav re-visits the tragic story and asks what lessons have been learned from the investigation and subsequent trials.

The documentary also chronicles the legacy of the death of Damilola and the importance of the anti-knife crime movement in which his father Richard Taylor OBE has played a lead role. The interviews are emotional, frank and revealing.

Saturday 17 September, 8.15pm from TUC Congress House, Great Russell Street, London WC1. www.britishurbanfilmfestival.co.uk

About BUFF

The British Urban Film Festival (BUFF) was formed in July 2005 to showcase urban independent cinema in the absence of any such state-sponsored activity in the UK.

Supported by filmmakers and British actors, the organisation was set up by Emmanuel Anyiam-Osigwe and established as BUFF Enterprises Ltd. BUFF bears no relation to the Buff film festival established in Malmo, Sweden. The London-based organisation was initially created in partnership with organisations like The Screen.Biz (UK) and The Hip-Hop Association (USA) to mobilise & develop young, up and coming homegrown British urban talent in the independent film & TV sector. With offices in east London, the company's annual showcase is the only one of its kind in the UK which is free to attend by the general public, only charging entry fees to film-makers who wish to submit their films in what is, according to the Film London agency, 'an important and emerging genre which is not otherwise seen regularly in the capital's cinemas'.
